TORONTO—The Sunday night Toronto mass shooting suspect has been identified as Faisal Hussain, a 29-year-old resident of Toronto, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has revealed.
“A short time ago, after speaking with a member of the deceased’s immediate family and a family representative, the SIU was able to confirm the man’s identity,” SIU said in a statement.
“Due to the exceptional circumstances of this tragic incident and the public interest in knowing the man’s identity, the SIU is identifying the man as Faisal Hussain of Toronto.”
The shooting happened on Danforth Avenue in the city’s Greektown neighbourhood, an area filled with restaurants. The gunman shot 15 people, leaving two dead and the rest injured. The deceased include a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old female.
The 18-year-old female was identified as Reese Fallon, according to MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who represents the Beaches—East York riding, CityNews reported.
A photo posted to Reese Fallon’s (right) Facebook page shows her with two friends just two months before the shooting. (Facebook)
Erskine-Smith told CityNews that Fallon was out celebrating a birthday with two friends on the Danforth when the shooting occurred. Her two friends were shot as well and are currently in hospital.
Social media posts indicate that Fallon recently graduated from high school and was preparing to study nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton.
The other victim, a 10 year old girl, has not been identified yet.
Witnesses say the shooter was dressed in all black and shot randomly at people in restaurants and through windows along Danforth Avenue.
Two police officers later exchanged fire with Hussain on Bowden Avenue, where he then fled on foot.
He was later found dead on Danforth Avenue from a gunshot wound, according to Ontario SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon who spoke at a press conference Monday afternoon.
It was not confirmed by the SIU whether the death was self-inflicted or as a result of the exchange of fire with police.
The SIU’s investigation is focusing on what happened between the man and the police officers on Bowden Avenue, according the Hudon. The shootings of the members of the public by the gunman are being investigated by the Toronto Police Services.
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said in a press conference Monday afternoon that the injured victims range in age from 10 to 59 years and their conditions are minor to serious.
There is a post-mortem scheduled in Toronto at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
